An interactive webinar was conducted on three day sickness disease, which every year hit the dairy industry and cost big losses. Alltech invited Dr. Muhammad Habib, vet manager at dairy farms on ABCD Forum to talk on this issue and guide the audience, local farmers and stakeholders about the challenges related to this disease and what proactive measures can be taken in order to control and minimize the disease chances and spread. Dr. Shahzad Naveed Jadoon, CEO/ Director Alltech Pakistan Pvt. Ltd. hosted the session and gave a brief outline of session to audience. Dr. Muhammad Habib has given a detailed insight into the issue and shared his experience of managing this disease at farm. While presenting he stated that this is a viral disease, transmitted by mosquito and is more complex that Vesicular Stomatitis Virus and Rabies Virus. It causes high morbidity while mortality is low, also result in economic losses, decrease milk production, medicine cost, Abortion, still birth, and other diseases due to low immunity. He emphasized on using one needle for one cow while vaccinating in order to eliminate risk of spread. The incubation period is 2-4 days after mosquito bite. He shared clinical signs which include sudden onset of fever 40-41C, depression, off feed, muscle problems, lameness, recumbency and nasal discharge.
Consider doing early diagnosis, he added. For treating this disease, give affected cow anti- inflammatory, and antibodies to avoid the secondary infections. For prevention and control, he recommended vector control program, annual vaccination, cleaning and hygiene and improve herd immunity. Despite of vaccination, ricks are there, He further added that there is a need of collaborations and sharing of such issues without any hesitation, to bring on better solution. Dr. Shahzad Naveed Jadoon supported his statement and said the industry should think on providing localized solution and build strategies and protocol in line to combat this issue.
